Sex crimes allegations can ruin a teacher's future

Teachers across Canada, including in Ontario are extremely vulnerable to accusations made by students. Whenever a teacher is accused of committing sex crimes, his or her career could be ruined -- regardless of whether allegations are ever proved. The community typically judges an accused teacher long before he or she has had the opportunity to defend against the accusations in court.

Sex crimes: Charges filed after rescue of missing Ottawa girl

Human trafficking and several other charges were recently filed against two individuals after police found a young Ottawa girl who disappeared in April. Forcible confinement and sex crimes accusations are among the charges that the two people will be facing. Following a search, police reportedly received a service call that led to the discovery of the missing girl.

Sex crimes charges dismissed after 21-month delay

Whenever individuals in Ontario face criminal charges, they have certain rights under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms. A man who was accused of sex crimes back in the summer of 2015 had the charges dropped by a judge because of unjustifiable sluggishness in  prosecuting the accusations. The judge ruled the office of the Crown Attorney failed to ensure the trial within a period that was reasonable.

New trial ordered after sex crimes conviction

The recent ruling of an Ontario Court of Appeal that granted a new trial for a convicted sex offender shows that any citizen of Ontario has a right to a fair trial. The appeals court ruled that irregularities took place during the original trial in 2015. The man was sentenced to spend five years behind bars for sex crimes involving two children.

The impact of technology on sexual exploitation

Researchers have determined that the rise in the use of technology over the years could also lead to increased exploitation and sex crimes that target minors. They note that this increase is in part due to the fact that more than just computers are involved. Children can also use webcams, cellphones, tablets, text messaging apps and more electronic devices. This has given them a level of access to the World Wide Web that they never had in the past.
