According to the Ontario Provincial Police, they arrested two men -- ages 22 and 17 years -- on a recent Thursday following a police chase that spanned several jurisdictions. The men face serious charges, and they will likely be exploring their criminal defense options. Reportedly, a concerned citizen called OPP to make a traffic complaint involving a vehicle on Highway 401 not far from Brockville.
Police say they received the report at approximately 5 p.m., and officers were dispatched to locate the vehicle. They allege the driver refused their request to stop and he continued along the highway. When the vehicle ultimately came to a halt near Long Beach, an altercation ensued, and witnesses reported hearing gunshots. During this incident, one police officer apparently suffered injuries to his hand, and he received medical treatment at hospital.
Authorities did not provide much information about the incident, and the 17-year-old juvenile was released after a brief court appearance. The 22-year-old male remained in custody while both awaited further hearings. However, the teenager is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Both men face charges of flight from police and possession of property under the value of $5,000 that they allegedly obtained unlawfully. Additional charges against the older man include attempted murder, driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, breach of probation and possession of a controlled substance.
The first steps other residents of Ontario in similar circumstances usually take is to seek the help of an experienced criminal defense lawyer. A skilled legal representative can explain the processes that will follow, including those related to minors. In cases in which the charges are as serious as those filed against these two men, seasoned lawyers can protect the rights of the accused individuals and work to achieve the best possible outcomes -- regardless of whether it is through negotiations or litigation.
