A woman police believe to be responsible for a serious car accident has been charged, according to local sources. The accident took place in Gananoque, Ontario back in February and involved two vehicles. The woman stands charged with careless driving and was expected to appear in court on June 27, likely alongside criminal defense counsel.
According to the accident report provided by Ontario Provincial Police, a 58-year-old man and his 85-year-old father were driving in a pickup truck on County Road 2 near Gananoque on the afternoon of Feb. 10 when the accident occurred. The report does not go into details about the specifics of the collision. However, it has been confirmed that the truck collided with a car driven by a 59-year-old woman.
The force of the impact was enough to kill the younger man, who was driving. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His father was rushed to a hospital in nearby Kingston, where he was pronounced dead later the same day. The accident report does not note whether the other driver was injured in the crash.
In criminal cases arising out of car accidents, the burden of proof is on Ontario prosecutors to show the court that the woman was indeed driving carelessly at the time of the crash. The woman's criminal defense may wish to see a more detailed account of the report to determine whether evidence may suggest that another party caused or contributed to the fatal crash. If so, it could influence the outcome of her trial.
