As you search for a new job, you want to do all that you can to make yourself an attractive candidate to prospective employers. However, some of this may be out of your control. If you have a criminal conviction on your record, it is possible for companies to look you up and learn about the conviction, at which point they may decide not to hire you. This is legal and can play a huge role in how hard or easy it is for you to land the job you want.
In order to look you up, all many companies have to do is to use the Canadian Police Information Centre. They partner with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to get access to this system. With it, they can run a search based simply on your name and date of birth, allowing them to easily see what your criminal record looks like.
The main name bank that is used is the National Repository for Criminal Records. It is worth noting that the NRCR is not the only name bank, and some companies turn to outside sources. However, these are not as reliable, as some offices do not end up contributing to them. Even those that do send in their information may not send complete records.
As you can see, no matter how qualified you are, a conviction can derail your shot at your dream job in a hurry. It's important for you to keep this in mind when going to trial, as it makes a strong defense even more important, helping you avoid lasting consequences. If you already have a record, it may also be wise to look into your options to have that record sealed. This used to be called a pardon, though it's now officially referred to as a record suspension.
