A man from Cornwall, Ontario, has been arrested after authorities say that he tried to smuggle three other individuals into Canada from the United States.
The man and three others were in Massena, New York, back on February 11. The Border Patrol agents there felt that the individuals were acting strangely, and they called the Canada Border Services Agency to report it. Canadian authorities then monitored the man based on those reports. After doing surveillance, they decided that an arrest was warranted, and all three were picked up by the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service.
The man from Ontario has been given charges due to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, as the authorities say that he was trying to bring the others into the country illegally. His name and age have not been given out at this time. However, the authorities have indicated that he promised to come back for a court date on March 15, and so he has been released from custody until that time.
The three people he was trying to help over the border, however, have not been released and are still going to be held until further reports can be made.
All Canadian citizens have the right to a fair trial, regardless of the crimes that they are accused of committing, even when those alleged crimes cross borders and involve people from foreign countries. It's important for those who are so accused to know their legal options.
