School dropout rates and crime

There is evidence to support the fact that those who drop out of school are more likely to commit crimes. There could be many reasons for this; young people who aren't in school simply have more time, for example, or the inability to get a job could lead to crimes of desperation. Either way, it is interesting to look at the dropout rates in Canada.

One study found that young men were more likely than young women to drop out. A full 10 percent of men did this, while just 7 percent of women left school. The study looked at those who were between the ages of 20 and 24, who were not currently in school, and who did not have a diploma.

In Canada, it's also been found that young Aboriginal people have greater odds of dropping out than non-Aboriginal students. The overall rate for non-Aboriginal people, when looking at the dropouts between 2007 and 2010, was only nine percent. When looking at those not living in reservations who belong to the First Nations, the Inuit people and the Métis people, the rate was a staggering 23 percent.

The highest rate found, though, was for those who were in foster care. While 81 percent of those not in foster care graduated, only 44 percent of those in the foster care system can say the same.

Young people who have dropped out of school could find themselves in compromising situations for many reasons, often created by the situation that they're in. They must know all of their legal rights, especially when they can utilize options other than jail time.
