The statistics show that roughly one-fifth of the violent crimes involving minors that are reported to the police happen at school. Interestingly, however, property crimes are less likely at school than drug crimes and violent crimes.
Not only do approximately 20 percent of the violent crimes that were reported happen at school, but a full 27 percent of the reported drug crimes occur there. These statistics do take into account crimes that took place during supervised activities or during normal school hours. The top two issues were cannabis possession and assault.
The time of day also seems to play a role. Violent crimes, for example, tend to occur most often between noon and 1 p.m. They then spiked again right after school lets out.
With drug crimes and property crimes, though, the same trend could not be found. Instead, property crimes happened most often in the later parts of the afternoon, while the drug crimes tended to take place more often at night.
In some ways, it is surprising that the statistics don't show an even larger amount of crimes happening during school hours, considering the fact that young people spend such a large percentage of their time there and are exposed to so many of their peers.
For those who have been accused of committing a crime at school, it's important to remember that this goes beyond a mere school rule violation. It could have a serious impact on the rest of a young person's life, so juveniles need to know what their legal options are here in Ottawa.
