Charges have been filed against three individuals after an investigation by the Windsor Police Drug and Guns Enforcement Unit. Ontario authorities have reported that the three individuals arrested as part of this operation are facing serious drug charges. It is not known at this time when court dates will be held for the accused, though each defendant is likely working alongside criminal defense counsel in preparation for the coming proceedings.
Windsor police report that they obtained a search warrant on June 8 to search a particular residence. Officers on the scene entered the residence around 11 a.m., whereupon several people were arrested. Police say they seized a large quantity of what they believe to be illicit drugs.
Police estimate the total street value of the seized drugs to be approximately $6,140. They said they seized 56 grams of what they believe to be methamphetamine as well as 3.4 grams of cocaine, a half-gram of MDMA and almost 3 grams of marijuana. Two scales, a cell phone and roughly $600 in Canadian currency were also recovered. Three people -- a 49-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman and a 33-year-old woman -- were all charged with possession. The man was also charged with possession with the intent to distribute.
Drug charges, whether resulting from an executed search warrant or otherwise, can sometimes be difficult to prove in court. Ontario prosecutors will have to prove that the alleged drugs they seized are indeed the substances they claim. They will also have to satisfy the court that none of the suspects' rights were breached during the course of the warrant execution and subsequent arrests. If defense counsel can call any of these issues into question, it could influence the outcome. In some cases, charges may be reduced or even dropped.
