A regional director of the Canada Border Services Agency was concerned that the actions of two of its agents would reflect upon the dedication, professionalism and integrity typically displayed by the agency's personnel. This follows the recent arrest of two agents on drug charges. Law enforcement suspects the men were involved in bringing drugs into Ontario through the Pearson International Airport at which they were working.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, these men are two of the five individuals who were arrested on suspicion of smuggling drugs from other countries into Toronto. It is alleged that the CBSA agents facilitated the import of over 30 kilos of cocaine from Jan. 2016 to April 2017. Officers claimed that undisclosed volume of cocaine was seized during the investigation.
Arrested were the two CBSA agents -- ages 37 and 41 -- along with three other men, ages between 32 and 57. The accused men are all residents of Ontario. They are all facing similar charges, including conspiracy, breach of trust and the importation of narcotics.
Conviction on drug charges in Ontario can have a significant impact on one's personal and professional life. Those facing these issues will likely benefit from securing the services of an experienced criminal defence lawyer to protect their rights throughout the legal proceedings. Legal counsel can examine the charges and the evidence that prosecutors intend to use in court in order to prepare a strong defence with the aim of achieving the best possible outcome, whether that be by challenging the accusations at trial or by negotiating a favorable plea agreement.
