While there may be a perception of the loosening of drug laws in Ontario, marijuana and other drugs remain illegal. When a person faces drug charges, regardless of whether the charges are serious or minor, the consequences may be severe. Four northeastern Ontario residents will likely be considering their defence options after their recent arrests on various drug-related charges.
The arrests followed the execution of search warrants that apparently led to the seizure of narcotics worth over $15,000. The drug enforcement unit of the city's police department searched three residences on a recent Thursday. The searches are said to have yielded marijuana plants, Xanax tablets, methamphetamine tablets, marijuana, shatter, hash and THC Gummies. Furthermore, police claim to have found drug paraphernalia and manufacturing equipment.
The four arrested individuals -- ages 24, 57, 20 and 52 -- face charges of possession of controlled substances. Two of them face additional charges of possession with the intent to traffic controlled substances, and possession of property obtained by crime. They are also facing charges of failure to comply with recognisance. The 20-year-old is accused of obstructing a peace officer, and while the first three were held in custody, the 52-year-old was released until her scheduled court appearance in March.
According to the police, two of these individuals were both arrested in Nov. 2015 on charges of drug trafficking. However, that does not mean they are guilty. The current charges are merely formal allegations, and any Ontario person who faces drug charges is entitled to retain the services of an experienced criminal defence lawyer. A skilled lawyer can protect the rights of a defendant while working to achieve the best possible outcome.
