Various Ontario units involved in the prevention of cyber child exploitation monitor the CyberTipLine that aids in the process of identifying individuals who partake in acts related to sexual exploitation of children. The court and the public regard child pornography charges in a severe light. The community in which an accused person lives often finds that person guilty long before trials even commence. In June and August, the Ottawa Police Service Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) received information from other units about information obtained through the tip line. It indicated an IP address to which child pornography images were allegedly downloaded from the internet via a chatroom. Further investigation revealed the identification of the Ottawa premises at which IP address was located.
The Ottawa Police Service obtained a search warrant and executed it on a recent Thursday. Police allege they found pornographic images illustrating sexual abuse of children on a computer at the residence. They arrested a 28-year-old resident and charged him with five counts, including three of possessing child pornography and two of making that material available to others. He is currently awaiting a bail hearing.
Any Ontario resident who is accused of child pornography will likely focus on obtaining skilled legal counsel.
