Police broke up an alleged drug ring on Aug. 31. They'd spent about half a year running Project Icarus, which was designed to take it down. The ring, which was apparently in southern Ontario and may have reached into the Toronto market, was said to be trafficking cocaine.
When news of the bust came out back in August, eight people had been arrested. The police apparently weren't done with it, though, as they've just made a ninth arrest. The latest person to be picked up is a woman who is being charged with both possession and tracking; she's 56 years old.
The authorities say that this isn't even the end. As the investigation continues, they think they'll bring in more suspects and figure out just how deep things went. Organizations that are working together to make the busts include the Ontario Provincial Police Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Serious and Organized Crime Section of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
In the initial bust, police claim to have picked up 11 guns, various other weapons, many different types of drugs, a Mercedes Benz vehicle and about $175,000. They also found stolen goods that they said were worth roughly $25,000.
Since this case is still going on and more arrests are being made, it's important for both those who have been arrested and those who are picked up in the future to know their rights. This could get to be very complex, meaning it's important to ensure that everyone gets a fair trial and that all evidence is properly examined and legally collected.
