Though specific statistics about sexual assault in Canada change every year, looking at trends and overall statistics can paint a general picture of what these crimes look like year in and year out. Below are a few important statistics to note.
-- Eleven percent of those who are assaulted end up with physical injuries.
-- False reports about sexual assault do happen, when victims make up accounts that are fabrications or alter the facts of the event. However, it's estimated that this happens in a mere two to four of every 100 reports.
-- Women are victimized more often than men, as they are the victims in more than 80 percent of the cases. However, it's worth noting that this still means a significant amount of men are involved as victims, as well.
-- In the vast majority of cases—80 percent—the incident happens at a residence.
-- Many sexual offenders are either in stable, long-term relationships or they are married. Experts estimate that this is true for about 50 percent.
-- More than half of aboriginal women have suffered some sort of sexual abuse, with estimates coming in at 57 percent.
-- In a full 80 percent of cases, the alleged attacker is a friend of the victim or a family member.
Those who have been accused of any sex crimes need to know what legal options they have when forming a strong defense, as all people have the right to a fair trial.
