A 46-year-old man from Ottawa is facing charges for sexual assault that stem from events that allegedly happened back in October. The accusations are being leveled by a 55-year-old man who claims he met the other man on the Internet.
The police have decided not to release the name of the 55-year-old victim, but they have said that the assault itself happened on October 1. The man waited almost a week to call in and report what had happened to him.
The police think that other people may have been victimized in the past, but they don't know for sure. They have asked anyone who has been victimized or who has any information about the alleged perpetrator to contact them.
Knowing that people may not want to call in and make reports of sexual assault or other sexually-based crimes, the police also gave out a telephone number that can be called to make anonymous tips. Furthermore, they said that the Ottawa police app can be downloaded and used to submit tips that way.
While the police have actively withheld most information in the name of protecting the victim's identity, they did say that the two met on the Internet in September, before they decided to meet in person.
Sexual assault charges can impact a person's life, career and family relationships. A conviction can result in jail time and mandatory registration as a sex offender. Those who are facing sexual assault charges have a right to a fair trial, and they must know all of the defense options open to them.
