The criminal code of Canada at section 810 provides for an order to keep the peace for a period of time. Lawyers will refer to it as an "810 order".
A peace bond is not a criminal offense but rather it is a court order used to keep you from committing (or recommitting) a crime. It requires you to agree to specific conditions to keep the peace.
The order may not exceed 24 months, there is no conviction but disobeying an 810 order may see this person charged with a criminal offence for not following the order.
A peace bond is preventative in nature, and not punishment. Although it does not result in a criminal record, it does get registered in police registries and may cause problems to the individual mainly if a "vulnerable sector search" is required for work purposes.
An 810 order can be used in two situations:
1) If a person fears Mr. X, on reasonable grounds, for his safety or the safety of his family, this person may apply to the court for an order that Mr. X be obliged to keep the peace.
2) If Mr. X is charged with a criminal offense but Crown and Defense counsel feel it's appropriate to withdraw the charge against him with Mr. X entering into an order to keep the peace.
